FAQ

Q: Why is IlluXCon in Altoona, and not in [insert name of random city, state, or geopolitical region here]?

A: IlluXCon takes place in Altoona because Altoona provides a unique flavor to the show. The small city atmosphere and lack of significant outside attractions means that IlluXCon takes on the feeling of a gathering of friends and colleagues, where the hours outside of the show are spent together with the same group of people.

Q: How many people come to IlluXCon?

A: The attendance at IlluXCon is strictly limited. We believe that the show needs to be all about personal interaction between artists, students, collectors, and fans, and that only works when numbers are controlled. Each year we sell 200 four-day Member passes PLUS an additional 100 Student passes. Add in the artists and their associates, and the total number of bodies at the show is around 400.

Q: I'm an art/gaming/merchandise dealer. Can I set up at the show?

A: In short, no. IlluXCon does not allow any dealers to set up at the show, with the exception of our single designated book dealer (to provide accessibility to art books for attendees).

Q: I'm an artist and I'd like to exhibit at the show. How do I do so?

A: The main exhibition at IlluXCon is juried. To get a spot in the show, you need to submit your work for consideration when the submission announcements are posted, usually about a week or so after the end of the previous show. (For example, the call for submissions for the 2013 show will likely be posted in the middle of November, 2012.) If you'd like to exhibit in the Showcase, the Friday night "show-within-a-show," you just need to purchase a ticket and reserve a Showcase table when they go on sale in December. The Showcase tables sell out quickly, though, so make sure to keep an eye out for the notifications and emails regarding the on-sale date and time for those tables.

Q: What do Pat and Jeannie do?

A: We're flattered that anyone cares. Pat is an instructional designer and video producer working for a Federal government contractor, telecommuting full-time. Jeannie is a freelance graphic designer/photographer and official IlluXCon Honcho.

Q: How is IlluXCon pronounced? And what does it mean?

A: IlluXCon is pronounced ILL-ucks-con. It actually stemmed from an abbreviation of the Illustration Exchange website as Illux for short.
